Magazine Content Survey

We conducted a survey to see what potential consumers would like in a typical magazine. We asked five questions. The majority of the questions were open ended questions which required the respondent to tick appropriate questions. The questions were;

1. What kinds of music do you like and listen to?
2. What do you like to see in music magazines?
3. What band or artists do you like to see in magazines?
4. How often do you read or buy a magazine?
5. Do you like free gifts with your magazine? If so, what kind of gifts?

We aksed four people to take this questionnaire.

For the first question there were twelve different boxes the respondent could tick. Here are the results;

1. What kinds of music do you like and listen to?
  • Indie > 2/4
  • Hip Hop > 1/4
  • R & B > 4/4
  • Pop > 2/4
  • Punk > 0/4
  • Electronic > 2/4
  • Drum and Bass > 2/4
  • Funky house > 3/4
  • Dance > 2/4
  • Jazz > 1/4
  • Soul > 1/4
  • Classic > 0/4

The only two genres which were not picked were classic and punk. Other than those two, all the other genres had at least one respondent who ticked it. R n B happened to be the most popular genre followed by funky house and then indie, pop, electronic, drum and bass and dance music. These are the most popular genres of today. This will help us choose appropriate material for the contents of the magazine we will be producing.

The second questions had five boxes to be selected from. The respondent could mark as many as they felt needed. Here are the results;

2. What do you like to see in music magazines?

  • Interviews > 4/4
  • Photo’s > 4/4
  • Competitions > 1/4
  • Reviews > 2/4
  • Concert details > 2/4

All of the respondents wanted to see interviews and photo's in the magazine. The results show that the respondents pretty much wanted a variety of things in a magazine.

The third question required a ist made by the respondents themselves. Here are the results;

3. What band or artists do you like to see in magazines?

  • The Killers, Jazmine Sullivan, Hadouken!, Alicia Keys, La Roux, Donaeo, Erykah Badu, Lily Allen, Britney Spears and new artists.

These are all the answers from all the questionnaires. As we can see, these artists are either new artists who have just entered the music market and industry or old favourites

The fourth question required the respondent to mark one box only. Here are the results;

4. How often do you read or buy a magazine?

  • Weekly > 0/4
  • Every other week > 2/4
  • Monthly > 1/4
  • Every other month > 1/4
  • Whenever you see one > 0/4

This question was used to see how often people actually consume music magazines. This was an important question to ask becuase these days the media is much more accesible. The internet and the vast number of music channels on digital tv have made the music magazine market break down. Nowadays only the popular music magazines are still around. Magazines such as NME, Q, MOJO and Kerrang! the results of this questions showed that the majority of people buy music magazines every other week which is quite frequent.

The fifth question asked if the respondents liked free gifts with their magazines. Here are the results;

5. Do you like free gifts with your magazine? If so, what kind of gifts?

  • All Cd's and one said no.

three out of four of the respondents said they would like to see free gifts. they also said that the free gift they would prefer was a Cd.
