Textual Analysis - Double Page Spreads 1

Kerrang! Double Page Spread

On this double page spread the image covers both pages, this represents that this is a powerful band. The way they are dressed are very death/rock style. One of the characters has not got a top on but has various tattoos all over his arms and stomach, this shows a rebellious streak, also the fact that he had no top on, looks like he has attitude and stands out most shows he might be the dominant one out of the five, and this is clear to the reader. The colours used are mainly black, red and white. The black and red are used to create a dark and mysterious feel for the reader, to show that the have “attitude”. The mast head/pull quote “It’s the sound of fie people fighting to express every emotion” suggests that the quote came from them which is why it is spread across the image in a large font all in capital letters, which shows to the readers its quite an aggressive tone. There is only one column of writing which is set on the right hand side of the page. The fact that there is not a lot of writing suggests that they don’t have much to say about themselves. It could also suggest that the reader will immediately spot the image which is very eye-catching, then read more about them after they have seen the image. This happens because most readers of any magazine will look at images first to see if it looks interesting, before they actually start to read the articles.

Vibe Double Page Spread

This double page spread is all about the artist Jamelia. There are two images of her the main one is on the right hand side of the page and is quite large, the other is smaller and on the left side of the page in black and white, with her name in a large transparent font across the image so you can see some the colours of her clothes through the writing. There is a pul quote in the middle of the page talking about her singing, this tells the reader that she had to practice to get where she is, which can make the reader understand where she is coming from. The article is an interview between Vibe and Jamelia. The writing is informal and relaxed as it is an interview. The interview was about Jamelia being the “Queen of RnB, Finding her voice and feeling exposed” this is said in the caption at the top of the page so the readers already know what the interview will be about so they read on.

NME Double Page Spread

This double page spread is all about “The Teenagers”. There is one image that covers the left side of the page. The three men are lying in a room on a bed looking relaxed and looking straight into the camera as if they were looking at the readers. The title is found in the middle towards the right, with the article located underneath. On the other side of the page there is a column of top stories “everyone’s talking about”. The fact that the image is used over one page and is large makes it very eye-catching and it attracts the reader to look at the image. The reader then might want to read the article. There is only one article to do with The Teenagers; this is located to the right of the image. The colours used are mainly blue, white and black; this connotes quite a male look. On the far right of the double page spread there is a different article that tells the reader about other stories. There is a pull quote in the middle of the writing which suggests it’s something they have said themselves which will attract the reader’s attention.
