Rosie Gunnell

Skins Analysis

This shows a medium shot of a young girl putting LSD in her mouth. Being a girl, it shows a more vulnerable character yet as she is doing this, the audience can see she is rebellious. Her red hair and wacky costume choice also shows she is non conformist. The director has done this to portray the teenagers as their own characters and showing the representation of confidence intertwined with the danger of drug abuse.

Here we can see the same character but with the effects of drugs taking control over her. The bright lighting shows what she is feeling whilst the drugs are affecting her, the boy behind her taking advantage of her or the fact she is allowing the actions to happen, shows the vulnerability she is under on drugs as she is out of control. In the scene, we can see other teens under the same sort of influence showing that she finds it as a normal occurrence for people of her age group with similar values.

This shot is from an angle making the audience feel as though they are in the toilets with the girls whilst taking cocaine. The director has done this to add to the feeling that this is a normal occurrence for people of this age. There are two girls in the shot to show that what they are doing is common with other people of the same age group. We see they are in a toilet cubicle and the drinks along the back of the cubicles show that they are at a party with alcohol emphasising the danger that could be caused due to the mix of teenagers with drugs and alcohol.

This shot portrays danger to the audience. We can see a group of teenagers all together, taking/trying a mixture of drugs. Their body language shows abnormality towards how teens would normally act showing that they are out of control. Their clothing shows that they are similar in the way their style of bright colours and various styles of clothes, leading to them feeling the same as each other towards what they believe in and what they think is acceptable. They are in a living room all squashed on one sofa together, some on peoples laps, others on the floor. The room seems dull and plain and contrasts with the bright colours from the characters in the scene. The director has done this to illustrate abnormality.

This shot shows a psychedelic view from one of the characters in the forest who has taken magic mushrooms. The shot is blurred an the light from the sparkler flashes and blurs light across the shots as the teen sees them. The effect of this is to show the audience what is seen in the eyes of a teenager when they have taken drugs. It pulls the audience out of their comfort zone of stability as it shows insecurity and lack of control through their vision and actions. It shows danger and explains why the teens are the way they are due to their struggles with their home life, loss of parents, unsure of sexuality, insecurity etc.
