Textual Analysis - Layout & Design 2

Q Magazine

Layout>>> The masthead (logo) of the magazine is placed on the top right corner of the cover. It is always placed in the same position on the page in every issue. There are coverlines along the sides of the page and two at the top. The two at the top just make up empty space around the central image. The central image is of the lead singer of the featured band and his pose puts across the ideology that he owns the page. The name of the band , The Killers is written across the middle of the page and across the singer, also underneath it is his name, Brandon Flowers and a anchorage text saying 'Starman' which links in with their latest single. The overall layout of the page is quite busy and there is information pretty much everywhere. The camera shot of the singer is a medium long straight shot which shows the whole body.

Colour>>> The background of the logo is red which makes it very striking and attract attention. The background image is wuite dark and dull so the use of pink and white coloured font for the coverlines is very clever. It makes them stand out.

MOJO Magazine

Layout>>> This front page has a specific theme, Motown anniversary. The masthead is behind the main image which shows that the magazine is popular and the readers and buers will already have heard of the magazine before purchasing it. The cover uses a main image of three of the most influencial Motown artists. Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross. There is the main coverline across the middle of the page which makes it clear to the reader that its a issue dedicated to Motown. There are more coverlines across the sides of the page and a few at the top. Also there is a pug at the top right corner of the page with 'Free CD' on it. A free gift always attracts people to buy the magazine.

Colour>>> Motown music was made in the black and white era so using a black and white image is releveant and also looks attractive on the magazine stalls. The colour scheme is consistent. The use of black, white and gold make the cover look classy and smart and it also links with what the cover models are wearing.

VOGUE Magazine

Layout>>> The layout of this cover is not any different from many magazines. The mast head is overlapped by the models head which shows that the magazine is probably well known. The buyers will already know what magazine it is even though the whole name is not visible. There are coverlines along the sides of the page and a main headline at the bottom of the page which is in a bigger font. The cover model is the famous supermodel, Lily Donaldson.

Colour>>> The mast head, coverline and main headline is in the same bright colour which makes it stand out against the light blue background. The colour of the dress worn by the model is matched to the font colours on the page.
